Football is my first love.

The most important thing you need to know about me is that football means everything to me. In my spare time when I’m not training, I relax by playing tennis or video games or eating (I absolutely love rice and stew) but at the end of the day, my mind is on football.

Football is my first love. I fell in love with football as a child and it’s never let me go. They say if you do what you love you’ll never work a day in your life? It’s true. I’m blessed that I found my passion because when I play football all I feel is happiness. I am especially happier when I’m scoring goals and helping my team. Luckily for me, my passion has and God willing will continue to take me places where I have never been.

What does football mean to me? It’s been the source of my closest friendships. It is how I met Onyeka, my best teammate who has become more than a brother to me. We are so close and whenever I need him the most, he is always there to support me in and outside the pitch.

Joshua Obakimi and Onyeka Udeozor celebrate a goal.

What does football mean to me? It has helped me cope with loss in my life. The worst loss in my life was the death of my two younger siblings. It almost broke me and even affected my football. I couldn’t even focus during my training in the field. But through the help of my friends and football, I was able to deal with my loss.

What does football mean to me? It has given me joy and success. My highest point in football and one of my most treasured memories was winning the recent Football State Championship with my team. No matter what is going on off the pitch, if you step on the pitch and give it your all in training and for 90 minutes. Trust me, that feeling of success is intoxicating.

What does football mean to me? It has given me values. Football has taught me to believe in myself. Football has given me a coach who inspires me in life and before every game. Now, I never give up and I feel like my best is not good enough. I have to do better. I have to be better. Football has taught me that a tough challenge builds character. Believe it or not, I would rather play a tough opponent like Saints FC than a weaker opponent because that victory means more.

What does football mean to me? It gave me Cristiano Ronaldo. He’s an inspiration to me because he is proof that if talent meets hard work, you can be unstoppable. Plus he’s better than Messi!

I am Obakimi Joshua. I am a centre-forwards for Dannaz FC. I am currently  in contention for top goal scorer of the 2019 Bet9ja SociaLiga.
