Citizens football club boss, Adedoyin Ajibike, is not letting his side’s performance so far in the 2018 Bet9jaSociaLiga get into his head and wants more when they take on champions Saints fc in the playoffs on Saturday.
It’s a repeat of the regular season tie between the two giants, as they look to fight for who faces Island Conference champions, Dannaz fc in the semifinals.
The Proud Citizen shocked SociaLiga watchers when they came from the brink of elimination to miraculously seal a first appearance in the playoffs since 2016.
Citizens lost their first three games in the 2018 campaign, but seven points from a possible nine in the remaining three matches ensured they booked a place in the last six, where they will face defending champions, Saints fc, this weekend.
However, not one to settle for less, Adedoyin, who is in his first season as a coach, says while his team’s performance so far has been fair, they are yet to achieve anything.
“It’s been fair,” he said during his pre-match press briefing on Wednesday evening. “We’ve got some good results and some bad ones as well, so it’s really been mixed.”
“[But] It’s really nothing because if we lose our next game we don’t get a reward for being in the top 6. So there is no emotion for where we are at the moment.”
This weekend, Citizens will square up against two-time winners of the Bet9jaSociaLiga, Saints, for the fifth time ever, with Saturday clash the third time this season alone.
Earlier on Wednesday, Saints manager, Kunle Ibaru, claimed that the Sky Blues are not a “real challenge”, but this does not come as a surprise to his opposite number at Citizens, who reacted quite bullishly.
“It is really no surprise he has said that, it’s how he is and it’s how his team operates. But we are absolutely fine with that. I guess it will make horrible cover to lose to a team that isn’t a real challenge.”
“[However], we are winning the game on saturday not because we want to be seen as a “real challenge”. We want to win because they are trying to stop us from achieving our goal for the season.”
With one win apiece for each side in their previous two encounters this season, surely, their playoffs clash is one game that is too close to call.
On what he expects from the champions, the former Citizens captain and Bet9jaSociaLiga player added;
“A very confident and aggressive attacking performance.”
We have heard from both sides, both confident of victory, but who will come out tops? @IBARU__ v @doyinbike @TheSaintsFC_ v @CitizensFc_
The battle line has been drawn, & one thing is certain, this game has 🔥🔥 works!! #Bet9jaSociaLiga #SociaLigaPlayOffs #SociaLiga #SAICIT pic.twitter.com/OfOwzBLzIU
