One: Lucas Moura won more tackles (8) than the entire Arsenal team (7). He also created more clear cut chances (2) than the entire Arsenal team (0). The funniest part? He didn’t even finish the game as he was subbed off by the 82nd minute. Smh. Arsenal.
Two: In the game between already relegated Espanyol and relegation battling Eibar, Bernardo Espinosa attempted 18 headers and won 16. Of course, you are already wondering who he bullied that badly. Well, that would be Kike Garcia of Eibar who attempted 15 headers and won only 2. That’s what you call a mismatch.
Three: In the 9 Premier League games during the weekend, only Wolves and Manchester City had more possession than their opponents and won. They won their games 3-0 and 5-0 respectively. You’re surely already wondering what happened in the other 7 games. Well…
Norwich had 52.5% ball possession and lost 4-0 to West Ham.
Newcastle had 52% ball possession and lost 2-1 to Watford.
Chelsea had 76% ball possession and lost 3-0 to Sheffield United.
Crystal Palace had 55% ball possession and lost 2-1 to Aston Villa.
Arsenal had 63% ball possession and lost 2-1 to Tottenham.
Leicester had 56% ball possession and lost 4-1 to Bournemouth.
Liverpool had 71% ball possession and drew with Burnley.
That’s a big L for ‘possession football’, at least this weekend. At least in the Premier League. We go again next matchday.
Four: 19-year old Anthony Gordon was on the pitch for 56 minutes in Everton’s 3-0 defeat to Wolves. He attempted 17 passes and completed 16. A healthy 94% success rate. Impressive, until you realise that only one (1) of those passes was directed forward. He basically spent the game avoiding line-breaking passes. To be fair to him, Ruben Neves was on fire so we understand the fear. Slightly.
Five: Over in Switzerland, the ball was flying. Literally. When FC Thun met Neuchâtel Xamax, the game ended 3-0 in favour of FC Thun. But something peculiar happened during the game. Both teams attempted over 100 long balls. In fact, it was like they were in a long ball contest, because their final tallies were so close. FC Thun 105 Neuchâtel Xamax 106. That’s a combined 211 long balls attempted by these teams in 90 minutes. Two Hundred And Eleven! And their accuracy was…eh. Less than 50%. Classic hoofball.
