4 Crazy Things That Happened During The Football Weekend

Football is a funny game. A lot of weird things tend to happen every once in a while, and sometimes, if you blink, you might miss it. During the past football weekend, some crazy things happened. Not just crazy but absolutely jaw-dropping. You might think this is probably an exaggeration but we’re fairly certain what you are about to hear will surprise you and maybe even amuse you. So what really happened?

1. Deyovaisio Zeefuik’s 5 minutes of madness

The score was 1-1 between RB Leipzig and Hertha Berlin at halftime. There was a lot to still play for. The first half had been a tough affair for Hertha who had scored first before withstanding a barrage of pressure from Leipzig. Manager Bruno Labbadia probably realized that he had to change something so that the Leipzig pressure could be dissipated because there was no way they were going to survive through that game with all that pressure. So he threw on Zeefuik for Peter Pekarik.

It was a like for like change, right back for right back. He probably felt that Pekarik was not dealing with the threat of Nkunku and Angelino well enough on Leipzig’s dangerous side. It took only 5 minutes for him to regret this substitution. Two minutes into the second half, Zeefuik picked up a yellow card. 3 minutes later he picked up another yellow card for another foul and was sent off. In his 5 minutes on the pitch, Zeefuik had one touch (a pass), two fouls after winning 0 of his attempted 2 ground duels, and that was the end of his cameo. Of course, Leipzig went on to win that game.

2. Ajax scored 13 goals in one game

This one definitely made headline news but it still needs to be said. Ajax were 4-0 up at halftime against VVV Venlo. And then Venlo had a player sent off. After that, it just rained goals. Ajax scored 9 goals in the second half. In the entire game, they had 45 shots, with 23 on target. 27 of their shots came inside the Venlo box. They created 12 big chances as well. Which brings us to the next crazy thing…

3. Ajax scored 4 goals in just over 5 minutes

Here is the sequence of events. Christian Kum of Venlo got a red card in the 51st minute, Ajax started their second-half onslaught 3 minutes later. They scored in the 54th, 55th, 57th, and 59th minutes. It was as if the red card for Venlo parted the sea like the rod of Moses. Which brings us to the next crazy thing…

4. Lassina Traore was directly involved in 8 goals in one game

In only his second start of the season for Ajax’s first team, following 5 sub appearances, 19-year old Lassina Traore completely decimated Venlo. He scored 5 goals and added 3 assists. It is worth noting that he had neither a goal nor an assist this season before exploding in this game. And no, it wasn’t just about the red card. He had 2 goals and one assist before halftime before the red card even happened. Needless to say, he took full advantage to boost his numbers. He is now one goal shy of the Eredivisie top scorer and the joint assists leader. All it took was 90 minutes of madness.
