3 Crazy Things That Happened During The Football Weekend

It has happened again. It has happened again. Crazy things have happened again. We have seen yet another football weekend of crazy and amusing occurrences. Last time, we saw Shaq Pinas make 3 goalline clearances and Eden Hazard scoring a goal, amongst other things. So what happened this past weekend? Let’s see.

1.Valencia scored 3 penalties against Real Madrid:

If you know how hard it is to get refereeing decisions against La Liga’s big 2, you will understand why this is so crazy. It’s already crazy to win 3 penalties in one game. But to do it against Real Madrid, that is something else. The game ended 4-1 in favor of Valencia, and every member of Madrid’s backline contributed to at least a goal. Ramos, Marcelo, and Vazquez all caused penalties while Varane scored an own goal. It was also yet another defeat in the pink jersey for Real Madrid. They must really hate that jersey now.

2. 35 goals were scored in Ligue 1:

Ligue 1 is a league well known for its lack of goals. At the end of every season, they usually rank 5th or 4th amongst the top 5 leagues for goals scored (mostly 5th). This is usually because there are so many conservative teams who play for draws. It is also the league that once had a golden boot winner who scored 15 league goals. You would expect the league to average between 2.4 goals per game and 2.6 goals per game over the course of a season, as it so often happens. This weekend though, Ligue 1 averaged a whopping 3.5 goals per game as teams romped to 35 goals. It is almost unheard of to hear of a scoreline like 4-4 or even a 5-1 away win by a team not named PSG. It really was that type of weekend. 35 goals? In one weekend? In France? Crazy.

3. Lionel Messi scored from open play:

Yes, you are reading it right. Lionel Messi actually scored a goal that wasn’t a penalty! Shocking! It happened this weekend albeit against 10-man Betis. Still, it was surprising to see him end his open play goal drought finally, especially after he scored yet another penalty. We were all thinking ‘here we go again’ until he popped up and scored another, this time from open play. As Eden Hazard showed us last week, miracles are real.
