All Black, a much improved team from last season, were very unlucky not to take the lead in the first half. A well worked freekick routine saw them create the first real of the game with Okoya Nurudeen shooting wide just inches to the side of the post.
Matchday 3 may as well have been named “The Coming of Age of Mujeeb Oguntowo”. The question of everyone’s lips after Matchday 3, same as ours, was “where has Mujeeb Oguntowo been all along?” The forward has been signed to Guns FC since last season but failed to score a single goal. On Matchday 3, however, the floodgates were finally opened and it rained goals for him. Four in 2 games, to be precise.
The meeting between All Black & Guns was a reverse fixture of the meeting between both teams on Matchday 1. When they did meet that day, All Black emerged victorious in a close 3-2 victory that left Guns’ defense all over the place it quite possibly could have been confused for counterfeits of the Super Eagles home jersey.
All Black FC 1-2 The Guns FC
All Black, a much improved team from last season, were very unlucky not to take the lead in the first half. A well worked freekick routine saw them create the first real of the game with Okoya Nurudeen shooting wide just inches to the side of the post. Minutes later, Mujeeb Oguntowo almost put Guns ahead following a well worked attacking Guns move which let him through on goal only to be stopped at the very last second. Shortly afterwards, Mujeeb again came close to putting Guns ahead with a left foot volley which produced the save of the game by All Black goalie, Isaac. Third time’s a charm, they say, and Mujeeb would not be denied on his third attempt. A long ball deep into All Black’s defensive third was met with a mistimed clearance by center-back, Leslie and Mujeeb capitalized by pouncing on the loose ball and slotting home past Isaac who, quite frankly, should have saved that. All Black fought valiantly for an equalizer with Moshood coming the closest with a left foot half volley which flashed wide. They again went close to drawing level, this time through Donald who capitalized on some comical defending by Guns FC only for his attempt to come off the post. It brought back memories of Guns’ terrible defending from the first encounter but this time around, it seemed the football gods were smiling on the Guns & they were.
Just after the restart of the game for the second half, Mujeeb Oguntowo doubled Guns’ lead thanks to an impressive show of control, acceleration, calmness & sheer will to put the ball in the back of the net. From then on, all Guns had to do was see the game out which they did despite substitute, KV’s late consolation goal. For long periods of the game, a draw seemed like a fair result considering the poor defending by both teams but Mujeeb Oguntowo had other ideas and, on this occasion, his was the only one that counted. The win snapped Guns’ 4-consecutive losing streak going back to last season. Finally, they had something to smile about.
